Cruising The Cut is about the historic canals of Britain. I (David Johns) quit my job in 2015, sold my house and went to live on a narrowboat. Initially videos of my travels, I now document various aspects of canal life. The vessel Narrowboat
Logbook 24
-
416. Cutting a new hole in my boat!
Having ever so carefully patched over the repaired transom on my project boat Twiggy, now I needed to drill a hole in it!
-
415. This is not supposed to be a sailing boat!
Braunston Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
Here's part 2 of my jaunt to the countryside outside Braunston where I re-fixed my taff rail seats to the boat, spent a pleasant afternoon napping and reading, then headed back in a very strong breeze that caused me problems.
-
414. I nearly crashed into another narrowboat... and then I scared some geese.
I took my narrowboat into the countryside for a quiet night bobbing about on the waterways but on the way I rescued an adrift narrowboat, nearly crashed into another, then disturbed a huge flock of geese.
-
413. Slapping a bit of gelcoat onto my project boat's back end.
After months of painstaking procrastination, the time finally came to paint some gelcoat (and then flowcoat) onto my rebuilt transom on the project boat, Twiggy. However, it appears Twiggy has cellulite.
-
412. A solar-powered boat tackles the River Thames.
River Thames United Kingdom
I was kindly invited aboard DB1, an all-electric prototype day boat for part of its journey along the length of the Thames, powered purely by the sun. (The entire, 6-day, journey was from Lechlade to London)
-
411. Canal boat dodgems! The British canals in peak summer season (part 2)
Braunston Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
After the summer canal carnage shown in vlog 410, here's my return journey when things got even busier! But can you guess how many boats will have gone past me in just over two hours?
-
410. Canal carnage! It's so busy in peak summer season...
Braunston Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
In the midst of the school holidays, in summer, in a heatwave, at a weekend, just how busy do the British canals get? Let's find out as I take a two hour trip to Braunston on my tiny narrowboat, Gentian.
-
409. The glamour of London canal boating.
River Lee London, United Kingdom
I was invited to spend a day aboard the narrowboat of my friend Hannah Bodsworth, who moors on the River Lee in east London. Then in return, I invited her to spend the day with me cruising the countryside canals.
-
408. Much bad language as I add fibreglass to the transom. Again.
Honestly, it's nearly done, I swear, but Twiggy's bottom needed a final layer of fibreglass to bump it up a bit, as well as some chopped strand mat around the corners, then a load of filler to join up all the gaps.
-
407. Lithium batteries on boats: dangerous or not? At Electrika 2026
Brinklow Marina Warwickshire, United Kingdom
The third annual Electrika show was held again at Brinklow marina in mid-July but rather than film flashy boat tours, I thought I'd take the opportunity to challenge experts and exhibitors about how safe we are having lithium bat…
-
406. The idiot on the canals is me, it turns out.
Napton-on-the-Hill Warwickshire, United Kingdom
This is part 2 of my return journey up the south Oxford canal from Cropredy marina to Napton. You can see part one using the link below.
-
405. I moored my narrowboat in the middle of nowhere and it was utter bliss
Cropredy Marina Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
At the end of June, my mooring contract with Aquavista expired and the renewal was more than I wanted to pay, so I had to move the boat! This video is part 1 of 2 of me heading firstly back whence I came, up towards Napton.
-
403. OMG. I actually fibreglassed the back of the project boat!!
It's an event that few thought would ever happen but I have finally applied three (so far) sheets of 1708 biaxial fibreglass over the back of my project boat, Twiggy, and this video documents that sticky process, using Atlac 580 …
-
402. Arrived at a beautiful narrowboat marina! (Cropredy trip Day 3)
Cropredy Marina Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Part 3 of my trip to Cropredy from Wigrams Turn down the south Oxford canal, here I descend the Claydon lock flight with much assistance from lock volunteers, do a further three locks myself and arrive at Cropredy just as it star…
-
Real-time canal cruising from Marston Doles to Fenny Compton (Not a Vlog!)
Fenny Compton Warwickshire, United Kingdom
Here is the full unedited bow camera recording from my recent canal boat trip from Marston Doles to Fenny Compton with glorious stereo sound and lots of birdsong and some angry geese.
-
401. Space aliens spotted on my latest narrowboat cruise! (Cropredy trip, Day 2)
Cropredy Marina Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Welcome along to day 2 of my three-day trip from Wigram's Turn marina down to Cropredy marina on the south Oxford canal.
-
400. The longest ever journey in my tiny narrowboat! (Part 1)
Cropredy Marina Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
OK, I grant you it's only a three-day trip but it's still my longest duration aboard the boat! I'm taking narrowboat Gentian from Wigram's Turn marina down the South Oxford canal to Cropredy marina.
-
399. The new transom is finally installed on my project boat, Twiggy!
For those who thought this day would never come, prepare to have your world shaken to the core - I have finally slapped resin all over the new wood core for Twiggy's transom, and pushed it into place on the back of the boat.
-
BONUS FOOTAGE: Not a Vlog but real-time canal cruising from Napton bottom lock to Wigram's Turn
Oxford Canal Warwickshire, United Kingdom
With lovely stereo sound, plenty of birdsong, water slopping noises and the engine grumbling away, this is 50 minutes or so of realtime canal boating, uploaded as BONUS FOOTAGE.
-
398. A wonderful weekend on my narrowboat (day 2)
Napton Warwickshire, United Kingdom
This is day 2 of my 'weekend' (actually a Wednesday and Thursday) aboard my little narrowboat on the South Oxford canal at Napton, just bobbing about having an escape from the world.
-
397. A glorious weekend on my tiny narrowboat (Day 1)
Napton Warwickshire, United Kingdom
With the weather being bright blue skies and sunshine, I took to the narrowboat for a couple of days to just chill and enjoy being on the water. Come and enjoy it with me in this video. Contact Me via

396. A bilge pump, a tin of filler, and a flask of tea.
I had to pop back to my project boat Twiggy to fetch something for use at home, so while I was there I put some better filler in the cabin holes, as well as trying to install a new bilge pump. But that's about the extent of it...
-
395a. Not A Vlog! Realtime canal boat cruise from Wigram's Turn to Braunston.
Braunston Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
This is a real-time recording from the bow camera of my narrowboat as it travelled from Wigram's Turn to Braunston. There is deliberately no commentary, just the natural sound recorded at the time.
-
395. Blimey! I actually went for a cruise on my tiny narrowboat!
Braunston Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
On a random day in mid-March, the sun decided to shine so as I was aboard the boat, I decided to give it a run up the canal, the first time it had been anywhere since last year.
